If you can estimate the number of pages/images that will be scanned, the dpi used and will the final images be black and white, you can calculate a rough estimate of the overall storage size of the project.<br /><br />As a rule of thumb, black and white images scanned at 200 dpi are typically 50 KB. For color, the average image size can be 30 to 200 times as large as a comparable black and white image - consequently, estimating storage requirements for a color scanning project are a bit more complicated. Just use this rule of thumb - it's going to be a heck of a lot more than black and white. There is good news; in today's world, memory is cheap so storing your color images is not cost prohibitive or difficult. A 1 TB SATA hard drive can be purchased for about $100.<br /><br />Recently, we were doing a conversion project for a client that required 300 dpi and color detection scanning. Approximately 30% of the images were in color and required considerable more space to store. The overall project required over 1 TB (that's right kids; over 1000 GigaBytes) of storage for the raw scanned images.<br /><br />We needed to scan onsite and then procedure the images back at the office. Fortunately, we could compress the colour images using PSI Capture; however, the general project will still take about 500 GB to shop all of the pictures and index information. For example, a small business owner hires a book keeper part time to update his accounting software, such as Quickbooks, with receipts, invoices, bills, etc. In "the old days", the book keeper would have to be onsite or stop by the office and pick up all of the hard copy documentation so that they could update Quickbooks back at their own office. Now, the receipts, invoices, bills, etc. can be scanned and posted on a content sharing and collaboration site such as SharePoint or Box.net (as a side note, SharePoint is a server based product offered by Micorsoft and Box.net is a Web 2.0 cloud computing site). The book keeper can be granted access to these files and they can continue their work with no time commuting back and forth to the office to pick up the documents. It gets even better. Let's say two businesses, separated by a thousand miles, are partnering together to bid on a large government project. They both need to work on the bid proposal which happens to be a MS Word document. The Word file can be placed in a shared content management folder. Comments and corrections to the bid can be added and revisions to the bid can be tracked. Access to the document can be controlled thus ensuring the document is secure from non-designated employees viewing the document. You are now in control of your documents. You can manage your time more effectively and efficiently. Manage your documents, don't let them manage you!<br /><br />"But what if I have "tons" of digital documents (word docs, spread sheets, PDFs, mp3, etc.) and I want to find them easily and only permit access to particular employees?" The aim of the scheme is to save time and resources by avoiding unnecessary duplication in the first stage of competence assessment; the CDM Core criteria.<br /><br />Background<br /><br />CHAS started with two main aims.<br /><br />To improve health and safety standards across Great Britain.<br /><br />To reduce duplicated safety applications for both suppliers and buyers.<br /><br />These days there are more than 400 public and private sector buyer organisations, such as councils, housing associations, NHS trusts, including a growing number of large private companies who employ sub-contractors.<br /><br />CHAS Benefits:<br /><br />Participating in the CHAS scheme helps both suppliers and buyers.<br /><br />Suppliers show compliance with important parts of health and safety law (the core criteria described in the CDM regulations).<br /><br />On achieving compliance a supplier is approved to work for all of CHAS' buyers.(Some Buyers may require "Accredited" Status)<br /><br />Inconsistencies are reduced where some suppliers may be judged compliant by one buyer but not another.<br /><br />CHAS gives guidance on any weaknesses in a supplier's safety management, including how they can improve.<br /><br />CHAS and Constructionline<br /><br />Constructionline is the Government's national register for suppliers. In the same way CHAS offers a tool for use in the health and safety element of pre-qualification, Constructionline provide the pre-qualification tool for use in financial standing, technical references and other areas. The CHAS management group supports the principles of a single register and so works jointly with Constructionline.<br /><br />Both CHAS and Constructionline have their own independence and identity but the schemes are linked.<br /><br />The Stages of Assessing Competency<br /><br />There are three stages in the assessment process from the time a supplier applies for a CHAS assessment, through to working for a buyer:<br /><br />The CHAS assessment: if a supplier passes this assessment they have shown they can adequately manage health and safety.<br /><br />The employer (buyer) checks a supplier has the ability, experience and resources to carry out the specific work they have applied to do. The buyer will look at things like method statements, specific risk assessments, references, examples of previous similar work, training and available resources.<br /><br />Monitoring the supplier when they are doing the work. Buyers will check suppliers are managing the work safely, carrying out the method statements properly, have enough resources, liaising properly, managing the site effectively and providing enough supervision.<br /><br />The level of assessment at stages 2 and 3 are normally proportionate to the level of risk they carry. Buyers have a responsibility to monitor suppliers, making sure they are working safely, in order to protect staff and everyone who may be affected by the work.<br /><br />Accessing the CHAS Database<br /><br />Buyers have access to the CHAS database, suppliers do not have access, other than their own personal pages if accredited. Suppliers cannot access information that relates to other suppliers.<br /><br />CHAS is registered under the Data Protection Act, but there is no personal information kept in the database. However, under normal circumstances the scheme manager will gladly tell suppliers about details contained in their entry.<br /><br />Buyer Membership Levels<br /><br />Buyer membership is free, providing buyers with three levels of access:<br /><br />Member level: full read and write access<br /><br />Subscriber level: read only but can add private comments and suppliers to their own supplier list<br /><br />Read only: allows searches only. ]]></description>
